About the role
The Senior Full-Stack Software Engineer at Welcome Pickups, you’ll be joining one of our product teams and building solutions for the users it serves. Your main focus will be backend engineering, while also contributing to the frontend to deliver complete features.
You will be working in a cross-functional team, reporting to the respective Product Manager and collaborating closely with designers and fellow engineers. You will have the opportunity to own features end to end, from shaping the solution to releasing it and seeing its impact on users. You’ll also help improve how the team plans, builds, and delivers software.
Our core stack is Ruby on Rails and React. Depending on your team and the components you work on, you may also contribute to our Ionic-based mobile apps or Angular components in the Driver app. You’ll have access to AI coding tools from day one, primarily Claude Code and GitHub Copilot. We encourage using them throughout development and expect you to understand, evaluate, and take ownership of the code you ship.
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain backend services, APIs, and integrations, ensuring reliability, performance, and data integrity.
- Deliver features across the stack, contributing to the frontend using existing components and patterns.
- Collaborate with Product Managers, designers, and engineers to shape solutions and make technical trade-offs.
- Own testing, release, production monitoring, and follow-up improvements for the features you deliver.
- Improve the codebase through refactoring and code reviews, and take initiative to improve team processes and development practices.
- Use AI tools effectively, applying your engineering judgment to validate generated code for correctness, security, and maintainability.
Requirements
- 6+ years of experience building and maintaining production applications, with strong backend expertise.
- Experience with Ruby on Rails or another modern backend framework, and willingness to work with Rails.
- Practical experience with React or another modern frontend framework, and willingness to contribute across the stack.
- Strong knowledge of API design, relational databases, and SQL, with experience using PostgreSQL or a comparable database.
- Familiarity with search engines, background job processing, and automated testing. We use Elasticsearch, Sidekiq, Minitest, and Playwright.
- Ability to understand and extend existing codebases, with solid practices in debugging, maintainability, and Git.
- A strong ownership mindset: independently drive work to completion, communicate progress and risks, and improve how the team works.
- Experience using AI coding tools, with the ability to critically evaluate their output and make sound engineering decisions.
