About Sysco LABS

Sysco LABS is the Global In-House Center of Sysco Corporation (NYSE: SYY), the world’s largest foodservice company. Sysco ranks 55th in the Fortune 500 list and is the global leader in the trillion-dollar foodservice industry.

Sysco operates 333 distribution centers across 10 countries, with 75,000 colleagues serving approximately 670,000 customer locations, including restaurants, healthcare and educational facilities, lodging establishments, entertainment venues and more. For fiscal year 2026, which ended June 27, 2026, the company generated sales of more than $84 billion.

Sysco LABS Sri Lanka delivers the technology that powers Sysco’s end-to-end operations.

Sysco LABS’ enterprise technology is present in the end-to-end foodservice journey, enabling the sourcing of food products, merchandising, storage and warehouse operations, order placement and pricing algorithms, the delivery of food and supplies to Sysco’s global network and the in-restaurant dining experience of the end-customer.

Role Overview

The Software Engineer independently delivers well-engineered code using established best practices, with the ability and willingness to pick up new languages, frameworks, and tools as the team's needs evolve. This is a foundational hands-on engineering role — building features, writing tests, managing version control, contributing to cloud/DevOps tasks with guidance, and using AI-assisted tools responsibly to support day-to-day development work.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Work

  • Apply OOP/SOLID principles, design patterns, and common data structures & algorithms with minimal supervision.
  • Apply basic concurrency/parallel programming concepts under supervision, and foundational secure programming concepts.
  • Learn new languages, libraries, and frameworks as needed; build a good understanding of the SaaS/PaaS solutions the team relies on.
  • Use foundational design patterns and reference architectures, seeking senior support as needed; interpret functional and non-functional requirements to complete tasks with minimal rework.
  • Use Sysco-approved AI coding assistants for code generation, debugging, and refactoring, always validating AI-generated output before committing; understand foundational AI integration patterns and contribute to related implementations.

Delivery, Quality & Operations

  • Manage code branches and versioned components comfortably; operate independently within the team's chosen project management methodology.
  • Implement code quality best practices and adjust existing code to meet standards without breaking functionality; write effective unit tests and understand the goals of integration and end-to-end testing.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and resolve straightforward production issues independently; navigate approved monitoring tools (e.g., DataDog, AWS CloudWatch) to monitor applications, including AI-integrated components.
  • Contribute to foundational DevOps tasks (CI/CD, configuration/secret management, infrastructure) and cloud implementations/PoCs (AWS/GCP/Azure) with guidance; stay aware of approved vulnerability detection tooling and cloud AI service usage guidelines.
  • Use AI tools to assist in writing tests and flagging code quality issues, validating AI-generated output for correctness and coverage.

People & Stakeholder Management

  • Communicate clearly and constructively, verbally and in writing; actively participate in project meetings and sprint ceremonies.
  • Estimate assigned tasks accurately and participate in team-level estimation/planning; stay aware of what teammates are working on and step up to support when advised by seniors.
  • Actively contribute to brainstorming sessions and research answers to technical questions independently; stay current on industry and AI trends through discussions and forums.
  • Use AI assistance responsibly for written communication and documentation; proactively explore how AI tools can improve personal productivity and share learnings with the team.

Requirements

Technical Skills

  • Solid grounding in OOP/SOLID principles, design patterns, and data structures & algorithms.
  • Working knowledge of foundational secure programming and data privacy concepts.
  • Comfortable with version control, branching strategies, and CI/CD basics.
  • Familiarity with at least one cloud platform (AWS/GCP/Azure) and willingness to contribute to cloud/DevOps tasks with guidance.
  • Experience using AI coding assistants for development tasks, with the judgment to validate AI-generated output before use.

Leadership & Soft Skills

  • Strong verbal and written communication; comfortable participating actively in agile ceremonies.
  • Reliable task estimation and self-management within a defined project methodology.
  • A proactive, independent learning mindset with willingness to research and self-improve.

Experience & Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
  • More than one year of professional software engineering experience.

Benefits:

  • Performance-based annual bonus
  • Performance rewards and recognition
