Hi, we're Oscar. We're hiring a Director, Actuarial to join our Actuarial team.

Oscar is the first health insurance company built around a full stack technology platform and a relentless focus on serving our members. We started Oscar in 2012 to create the kind of health insurance company we would want for ourselves—one that behaves like a doctor in the family.

About the role:

The Director, Actuarial, plays an important role in Oscar's actuarial department, leading a skilled team to manage Regional pricing across multiple states, drive strategic decisions and ensure regulatory compliance. Additionally, responsibilities will extend to mentoring and developing Oscar's team of actuaries. This team includes Associate Directors, Managers, and Analysts. Responsibilities will also involve collaborating closely with cross-functional teams in Finance, P&L, Product Development, and others. This actuarial leadership position makes critical actuarial decisions, has ownership of financial estimates and forecasts, and communicates recommendations to senior executives.

You will report into the VP, Actuarial.

Work Location: This position is fully remote and open to candidates residing in the U.S., excluding Alaska; Delaware; Hawaii; Louisiana; Montana; North Dakota; Oklahoma; West Virginia; Wyoming; and U.S. Territories. Daily work is completed from your home office, with occasional travel required for team meetings and company events. #LI-Remote

Pay Transparency: The base pay for this role in the states of California, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, and Washington is: $198,720 - $260,820 per year. You are also eligible for employee benefits, participation in Oscar's unlimited vacation program, company equity grants and annual performance bonuses.

Responsibilities:

  • Own decision-making responsibilities related to Actuarial methodologies, model enhancements, and business initiatives including but not limited to continually refining Actuarial approaches across the Director's portfolio and the business as a whole.
  • Oversee the end-to-end actuarial pricing processes within a specific portfolio.
  • Promote long-term goals and objectives that guide the strategic direction of the Actuarial function as a whole.
  • Have an in-depth understanding of key financial risks and opportunities within the domain and more broadly across Oscar's business. Apply learnings to guide analytical pricing, prospective pricing strategy, SAE considerations, network strategy, and other unique mitigation strategies.
  • Mentor, coach, and provide Actuarial team members with regular feedback and developmental guidance.
  • Provide an Actuarial viewpoint within cross-functional discussions across finance, P&L, product development, etc. to drive business objectives, insights, and understandings.
  • Lead and shape Oscar Actuarial best practices with respect to automation and documentation.
  • Develop strong relationships, rapport, and lines of communication with both internal and external senior stakeholders.
  • Compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field, or 4 years commensurate experience.
  • Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (SOA), or on the track to become one.
  • 10+ years of actuarial and/or quantitative analysis experience.
